A spraying drone working cotton and groundnut fields in Saurashtra takes more punishment in one season than most products see in a lifetime: chemical mist, fine dust, constant vibration, hard landings on field bunds and months of sun. The small accessories take the worst of it. That is where agriculture drone parts 3D printing in India earns its place. Nozzle brackets, tank cradles, sensor housings, prop guards and landing feet can be printed in days, changed after every field trial and reordered from the same file. This guide is for agri-drone startups, drone service providers and farmer producer organisations (FPOs) in Gujarat and across India. It covers which parts suit printing, how to test them against agrochemicals and where printing must stop. Most of these parts come off our SLS nylon 3D printing line.

Which Drone Parts Suit Printing, and in What

Accessories and mounts are the sweet spot: parts that change between drone models, carry modest loads and benefit from a custom shape. This is how we usually match them to processes:

PartProcess and materialWhy
Nozzle and pump bracketsSLS PA12 or PA12-GFStiff, printed without supports, holds shape under vibration
Tank and hopper mountsSLS PA12-GF or PA12-CFStiffness for a heavy, sloshing load at low weight
Sensor and camera housingsSLS PA12; FDM ASA for early prototypesEnclosed shapes with cable routing built in
Prop guardsSLS PA12 or TPU 95ALight rings that flex rather than shatter
Landing-gear feet and bumpersSLS TPU 88A or 95AAbsorb hard landings on uneven ground
Hose clips and fluid-line adaptersSLS PA12, or DMLS 316L for harsh serviceCustom routing; stainless where chemicals or loads demand it

For quick fit checks, our FDM 3D printing in PETG or ASA is economical, from ₹400 per part. When a fitting sees constant chemical contact or high clamping force, DMLS metal printing in 316L stainless is worth the step up, from ₹5,000 per part.

Agrochemicals: Test Before You Trust

PA12 nylon resists oils, fuels and many common chemicals, which is why it is the default for spray-system parts. But agrochemicals are not one chemical. Emulsifiable concentrates carry solvents, many products contain surfactants, and tank mixes combine several. A material that shrugs off one formulation can swell, soften or crack in another, and no datasheet replaces testing with the products your operators actually spray.

There is no minimum order, so start with a single part and test it yourself:

  1. Order one part, or a small batch of the fitting, in your candidate material.
  2. Weigh it and measure its critical fits before exposure.
  3. Soak it in the tank mixes you use most, at field concentration, following the product label's handling instructions and wearing the PPE it specifies.
  4. Check it weekly for swelling, softening, cracking, stickiness or colour change, and re-measure the fits.
  5. Fit passed parts in a non-critical position for a full spraying cycle before rolling them out across the fleet.

Daily wash-down matters too. Parts are rinsed after every shift, so avoid crevices where residue collects, and add drain holes to housings so rinse water does not sit inside.

Vibration, Sun and Every Gram of Weight

An agricultural drone vibrates constantly, lands on rough ground and then sits in the open between sorties. Design accessories with that in mind:

  • Fasten for vibration. Use heat-set threaded inserts, or through-bolts with lock nuts, rather than screws driven straight into plastic.
  • Round internal corners. Fillets where a bracket meets its base spread the stress, so cracks do not start there.
  • Plan for sun. Unprotected nylon can turn chalky and brittle after long outdoor exposure. Inspect printed parts every season, and use ASA for FDM parts that live outside.
  • Save weight deliberately. Every gram of accessory is a gram less spray liquid or flight time. SLS allows hollow sections, ribs and lattices without supports, and carbon-filled PA12 gives stiffness at low weight.
  • Keep it serviceable. A guard that bolts on is replaced in the field in minutes; one bonded into the frame grounds the drone.

Our guide to 3D printing for drone and UAV manufacturing covers airframe-level design for startups building their own platforms.

Drone Rules, and What Never to Print

Agricultural drones are not hobby quads. In India, drones are governed by the Drone Rules, 2021, issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, with registration and permissions handled through the DigitalSky platform. Commercial operation generally needs a type-certified drone model, a registered aircraft and a certified remote pilot. Spraying adds another layer: the government has issued standard operating procedures for drone spraying, and only products and doses approved for drone application belong in the tank. Rules change, and this is general information rather than legal advice, so check the current requirements before each season.

Modifying a certified drone needs care. New accessories can change its weight and balance and how closely it matches the certified design, so check with the manufacturer before fitting printed parts to a type-certified model.

Some parts should never be printed for flight without proper qualification: propellers, motor mounts, arms, frame hubs and anything whose failure brings the drone down. A startup qualifying its own design may prototype these with us, but testing, certification and responsibility stay with the designer. Printing belongs on accessories that can fail without bringing the aircraft down.

From Prototype to Fleet Spares

For drone service providers and FPOs, downtime in the spraying window costs more than any part. Printing changes the spares question from stocking boxes of fittings to keeping a library of files.

A practical path: prototype a bracket in FDM, refine it over two or three field trials, then move the proven design to SLS for the fleet. With no minimum order, you can print a full set of mounts for several identical drones, or one replacement guard. SLS lead time is typically 4–6 days and FDM 3–5 days, and we ship from Ahmedabad across India. Order spares before each kharif and rabi season begins, not in the middle of it, and keep a revision number on every file so the whole fleet runs the same version.

Ground equipment benefits from the same thinking. Boom-sprayer nozzle holders, seed-drill fittings and pump guards are covered in our guide to 3D printing for agriculture equipment and spares.

Key Takeaways

  • Print the accessories: brackets, mounts, housings, guards and feet suit SLS nylon and TPU; flight-critical structures do not.
  • Test against your chemicals: soak-test parts in real tank mixes before trusting them in the field.
  • Design for the field: inserts or lock nuts, filleted corners, seasonal inspection and bolt-on mounts.
  • Stay legal: follow the Drone Rules, 2021, DigitalSky and spraying SOPs, and check with the manufacturer before modifying a certified drone.
  • Stock files, not boxes: reorder proven parts before each season from the same revision-controlled file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 3D printed parts be used on agricultural spraying drones?

Yes, for accessories such as nozzle brackets, tank mounts, sensor housings, prop guards and landing feet. Test them against the chemicals you spray and inspect them regularly. Flight-critical structures such as propellers, arms and motor mounts should not be printed for flight without proper qualification.

Is PA12 nylon resistant to pesticides and fertilisers?

PA12 resists many oils, fuels and common chemicals, but agrochemical formulations vary widely and some solvents can affect it. Soak-test a part in your actual tank mixes before relying on it. For constant contact with harsh chemicals, a 316L stainless part made by DMLS may be the safer choice.

What is the best material for drone landing gear feet?

Flexible TPU printed by SLS works well. TPU 88A is softer and cushions hard landings on uneven ground, while TPU 95A holds its shape better for feet that also locate the drone. Both bounce back where rigid plastics would crack.

Do I need permission to fly an agricultural spraying drone in India?

Generally, yes. The Drone Rules, 2021 cover registration, type certification and remote pilot certification through the DigitalSky platform, and agrochemical spraying follows separate standard operating procedures. Check the current rules for your drone and operation; this is general information, not legal advice.
