Toy Prototype Manufacturing in India: Concept to Approval Samples

Toy prototype manufacturing in India, stage by stage: SLA looks-like models, nylon mechanisms, buyer sample sets, bridge tooling and the BIS toy rules.

Every toy on a shop shelf started as something much rougher: a sketch, a hand-carved figure, a test car with a wobbly wheel. For toy brands, startups and independent designers, toy prototype manufacturing in India used to mean waiting weeks for a model-maker or sending files abroad. Today a design can go from CAD to a sample a buyer can hold within a working week. At our Ahmedabad studio we make the physical stages of that journey: detailed concept models in SLA resin, working mechanisms in nylon, matched sample sets for buyer meetings, and bridge tool inserts for a pilot run. Each stage answers a different question, from “does it look right?” to “can it be moulded?”, and deserves its own process. Below is what to use when, and the one point every toy company must keep straight: a prototype is not a certified toy.

Concept and Looks-Like Models in SLA Resin

For characters, vehicles, playsets and anything with fine surface detail, SLA resin is the natural starting point. It builds in fine layers, so facial features, panel lines, embossed logos and textures come out crisp, and the surface is smooth enough for a finisher to prime and paint for a pitch or photo shoot. Our SLA line holds ±0.05mm and fits parts up to 192×120×245mm in one piece. Larger figures are split at natural seams, such as a neck or waistline, and keyed so the halves join cleanly.

Standard resin suits pure display models. Tough or engineering resin is the better choice when a model will be passed around meetings and trade fairs, because standard resin can chip if it is dropped. Clear resin works for windows, visors and light pipes on vehicle and robot toys.

Four habits make looks-like models faster and cheaper:

  1. Send the sculpt at final scale, not the size you hope to reach later.
  2. Tell us which faces will be seen, so support marks go on hidden surfaces.
  3. Hollow large figures, with drain holes, to save resin and cost.
  4. Decide early who paints; finishing options depend on the process, so ask when you request a quote.

Mechanism Prototypes That Survive Play

Once the look is right, the questions change. Does the push-along car roll straight? Do the building blocks grip firmly without being impossible for small fingers to pull apart? Does the action figure's shoulder hold a pose after the hundredth twist? Our SLS nylon 3D printing line is built for this stage. PA12 is tough and slightly flexible, so snap fits, clips, ratchets, living hinges and gear trains behave much like moulded plastic. SLS needs no support structures, which means captive axles and pre-assembled hinges can print in one piece, and dozens of small parts can share one build.

PA12 holds ±0.2mm, enough to test clearances honestly, and you can try two or three versions of a click mechanism side by side in the same order. TPU 88A or 95A covers the soft parts: tyres, grips, squeeze features and bumpers. Our guide to snap-fit and living hinge design explains the geometry that makes clips last.

One honest caveat: printed nylon is not the moulded plastic your final toy will probably use. Treat drop and abuse results as a strong signal, not the final verdict, and repeat the key tests on pilot mouldings.

Approval Sample Sets for Buyers and Fairs

Approval samples are where many toy timelines slip. A national retail chain, an export buyer or a marketplace category manager wants to see several units, and every unit must match the others. Because each one is printed from the same file on calibrated machines, the sixth sample matches the first. With no minimum order quantity, you can order a set of six for one buyer meeting without paying for a production batch.

Plan the set backwards from the meeting date. SLA parts take 2–4 days and SLS parts 4–6 days, so a mixed set needs about a working week, plus your own painting, assembly and packing time. Label every sample with a revision code so feedback from the buyer maps back to the right file.

Bridge Tooling for the Pilot Run

When the design is approved, jumping straight into hardened production steel is a big bet. A bridge tool lets you mould a pilot quantity in the real production plastic, check sink marks, flash, gate positions and colour, and put early stock in front of real children and real retailers. Our injection tooling service makes inserts in aluminium 7075 for short runs and H13 for longer ones, with copper alloy inserts where faster cooling helps. Inserts hold ±0.05mm, take 7–14 days, and start from ₹15,000 per tool insert.

Toys need particular care at this stage: generous radii on every edge a child can touch, draft on deep shells so parts release cleanly, and gates placed where their vestige won't leave a sharp point. Our guide to designing for injection moulding covers draft, walls, ribs and bosses in detail. Ask when you request a quote how the pilot moulding itself will be handled.

Tip from the Layer X engineering team: freeze the mechanism before you cut a bridge tool. Changing a clip after the insert is made costs far more than printing two more nylon versions first.

Safety and the BIS Toy Rules: What a Prototype Is Not

Toys sold in India fall under the Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order for toys. In general terms, toys made or imported for sale must conform to the relevant Indian Standards for toy safety and carry the BIS standard mark under a licence, and the rules apply to domestic makers and importers alike. Scope and requirements can change, so check the current position directly with BIS before you plan a launch.

A 3D printed prototype, however good, is not a certified toy. It has not been tested against those standards and should never be sold or given away as a finished product. While you prototype:

  • Remember that toys for very young children must not contain small parts that can be swallowed or inhaled, and design for that from the first sketch.
  • Sand off support nubs on resin prints before anyone handles the model.
  • Use tough resin or nylon for anything handled roughly, because standard resin can snap into sharp fragments.
  • Keep play-testing with children supervised, and keep prototypes out of mouths.

Key Takeaways

  • Prototype in stages: looks-like, works-like, sample set and pilot run each answer a different question.
  • SLA for looks: fine detail and smooth surfaces for pitches, photos and character models.
  • SLS for function: PA12 and TPU let you test clicks, hinges, wheels and soft parts before tooling.
  • Bridge tooling before steel: aluminium 7075 or H13 inserts prove mouldability on a pilot run.
  • Prototypes aren't certified toys: check the current BIS rules before anything is sold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a toy prototype cost in India?

It depends on size, process and quantity. SLA parts start from ₹800 per part, SLS from ₹1,200 per part and FDM from ₹400 per part, while bridge tool inserts start from ₹15,000 per tool insert. Send your CAD file and our engineers will quote within 24 h, suggesting a cheaper process where it would do the job.

Can I sell 3D printed toys in India?

Toys sold in India must comply with the BIS Quality Control Order for toys, which generally means meeting the relevant Indian Standards and carrying the BIS mark. Our printed parts are prototypes and samples, not certified toys. Check the current rules with BIS before you sell anything.

Which 3D printing is best for toy mechanisms?

SLS nylon PA12 is usually the best choice for snap fits, gears, hinges and axles, because it is tough, slightly flexible and needs no supports. TPU suits tyres and soft grips. SLA resin is the better pick for detailed looks-like models.

Why Layer X for Toy Prototyping?

Toy development needs several processes in quick succession, and we keep them under one roof in Satellite, Ahmedabad: SLA for looks-like models, SLS nylon and TPU for mechanisms, and injection tool inserts for pilot runs. Our engineers review every file and quote within 24 h, flagging thin walls, weak clips and hard-to-mould shapes before you spend money. There is no minimum order quantity, so one figure or a matched sample set is fine. We make everything in Ahmedabad and ship across India, and our ISO 9001:2015 quality system keeps every revision traceable. Send us your files and your buyer-meeting date. Get your 24-hour quote.
