You've seen a 3D printed lamp with a beautiful pattern, a tiny figurine of someone's pet, or a name plate cut from shining steel, and now you want one as a gift or for your home. Then the questions start. Which 3D printing is best for gifts? What do all those acronyms mean? And why do two quotes for the “same” item look so different? This guide is for gift buyers, home décor shoppers, event planners and small businesses with no engineering background. We'll explain, in plain words, the four options we use at our Ahmedabad studio: FDM printing, SLA resin, SLS nylon, and laser-cut acrylic or steel. Then we'll help you choose, tell you what to send if all you have is a photo, and show you how to read the quote.
The Four Options in Plain Words
You don't need to understand the machines, only what each one is good at.
- FDM: imagine a very precise hot-glue gun drawing your object in plastic, one thin layer at a time. Up close you'll see fine lines, a bit like the grain in wood. It's the most budget-friendly option and the best for bigger pieces.
- SLA resin: a light hardens liquid resin layer by layer. The result is very smooth and very detailed, perfect for small, intricate pieces like figurines.
- SLS nylon: a laser fuses fine nylon powder. Pieces come out strong, with a soft matte, slightly sandy feel, a little like eggshell or stone.
- Laser cutting: not 3D printing at all. A laser cuts flat shapes from acrylic or metal sheet, for name plates, wall art, signs and layered cut-outs. We cut acrylic, steel and aluminium, but not wood or MDF.
None of these prints in full photo colour. FDM plastics come in a range of solid colours (ask which are in stock), SLA resins are usually one neutral shade, and SLS nylon is a pale grey-white. For a multi-colour look, an artist can paint the piece, or the design can be split into parts in different colours. If you'd like the engineering detail, our FDM vs SLA vs SLS guide goes deeper.
Side by Side: Look, Detail, Strength, Size and Budget
Here's how the four options compare on the things gift buyers actually care about.
| FDM | SLA resin | SLS nylon | Laser-cut acrylic or steel | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Fine visible lines, solid colours | Smooth, almost moulded | Soft matte, slightly grainy | Crisp flat shapes, glossy or metallic |
| Fine detail | Good for bold shapes | Best for tiny features | Good | Sharp outlines, but flat |
| Strength | Good | Can chip if dropped | Very tough | Acrylic can crack; steel is very strong |
| Largest single piece | 300×300×400mm | 192×120×245mm | Ask us | Cut from a 1500×3000mm bed |
| Starting price | From ₹400 per part | From ₹800 per part | From ₹1,200 per part | From ₹300 per metre cut |
Starting prices are a floor, not a quote. A bigger or more detailed piece costs more, and ordering several of the same item in one batch usually brings the price per piece down. Pieces larger than the single-piece size can be printed in sections and joined. For small, detailed gifts our SLA resin printing is usually the answer; for anything big, FDM is kinder to your budget.
Matching Your Gift to the Right Process
Most gift and décor ideas fall neatly into one option.
Figurines, miniatures and pet portraits need fine detail, so SLA resin is the natural pick. Lamps, lampshades, planters and large décor are usually FDM, because size matters more than tiny detail. Name plates, wall art, door signs, wedding signage and logo pieces are flat, so laser-cut acrylic or steel gives the cleanest result. Keychains, desk organisers and things handled every day do well in tough SLS nylon. Corporate and event gifts in quantity can use any of these; there's no minimum order, and every piece comes from the same file, so the fiftieth matches the first.
A few safety notes before you order. Use only LED bulbs in printed lamps, never candles or hot bulbs, because plastic softens and can burn. Don't leave PLA pieces on a car dashboard in summer, as they can warp. Printed vases are best for dried flowers, or with a glass liner for water. And treat printed cups, coasters and bowls as décor only; we never describe printed items as food-safe.
Only Have a Photo or an Idea? Here's What to Send
We print from 3D design files. We don't sculpt or design models ourselves, so if you're starting with a photo, a sketch or an idea, the first step is a designer. It's easier than it sounds:
- Find a 3D artist or CAD designer. Ahmedabad has plenty of freelance design talent, and design students often take small commissions.
- Brief them clearly: the size, who the gift is for, where it will sit, your deadline, and whether it will stay one colour or be painted.
- Ask for the right file: an STL or STEP file at final size for printing, or a vector file such as DXF or SVG for laser cutting. Our guide to files for a quote explains the difference.
- Check free libraries first. Sites like Printables and Thingiverse have a huge range of ready designs, but check each licence, because many don't allow commercial use.
- Send us the file. We'll tell you whether it's printable and suggest fixes, such as thickening a delicate part.
How to Read Your Quote
A gift quote may look short, but each line tells you something. Check the process and material first, for example “SLA, standard resin, grey”, and make sure it matches what you pictured. Next come quantity and unit price; if you need ten of something, ask what twenty would cost, because the price per piece often drops. Size matters too: if the total feels high, ask whether making the piece slightly smaller or hollow would help.
Then look at lead time. FDM takes 3–5 days, SLA 2–4 days, SLS 4–6 days and laser cutting 7–14 days, plus courier time from Ahmedabad. For weddings, festivals and corporate events, order well ahead, because everyone else is ordering too. Finally, check what finish the quote includes; finishing options depend on the process, so ask if you want something beyond the raw piece. Our guide to what drives a 3D printing price goes line by line.
Key Takeaways
- FDM: budget-friendly and best for big décor like lamps and planters.
- SLA resin: smooth and detailed, ideal for figurines and small keepsakes.
- SLS nylon: tough and matte for things handled every day.
- Laser cutting: crisp acrylic or steel for name plates, signs and wall art.
- Start with a file: work with a designer if you only have a photo or an idea.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which 3D printing is best for a personalised gift?
It depends on the gift. SLA resin is best for small, detailed pieces like figurines, FDM suits larger décor on a budget, and laser-cut acrylic or steel is ideal for name plates and wall art. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll suggest the best fit.
Can you make a 3D model from my photo?
We don't design or sculpt models ourselves. A 3D artist or CAD designer can turn your photo or idea into a printable file, and we'll print it and tell you if anything needs fixing.
Are 3D printed gifts strong enough to last?
Yes, with the right choice. SLS nylon and FDM in tougher plastics handle everyday use well, while SLA resin is best for display pieces that won't be dropped. Keep printed plastics away from heat, flames and direct summer sun.
